History and Mythology of Trimbakeshwar Temple
According to mythology, Maharishi Gautam and his wife lived in an ashram on the Brahmagiri mountain. Many other sages and their wives also lived in the ashram. Once Maharishi Gautam’s wife had a fight with the wives of other sages. Those sages asked Maharishi Gautam and his wife to leave the ashram and accused them of cow slaughter.
To get rid of the sin of cow slaughter, Maharishi Gautam decided to bring Mother Ganga to earth and established a Shivalinga and started doing penance of Shiva. Pleased with his rigorous penance, Lord Shiva appeared and asked Gautam Rishi to ask for a boon.
In the boon, Maharishi Gautam asked for the boon of Goddess Ganga to appear at this place and Lord Shiva granted him the boon but Mother Ganga put a condition that she will stay here only if Lord Shiva will also stay at this place and Lord Shiva accepted and Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga appeared and then the river Ganga started flowing as Godavari and Godavari also came to be known as Ganga of the South.
