Khatu Shyam, also known as the Kalyug incarnation of Lord Krishna, is located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, about 80-85 km from Jaipur. Thousands of devotees come here in search of blessings and fulfillment of their wishes.
The Legend of Khatu Shyam
According to Hindu mythology, that the beginning of Khatu Shyam Ji’s story in the Mahabharataa. Barbarik which was a extraordinary warrior, who is the sone of Ghatotkacha, son of Bhima (Pandava).
Barbarik was a great devotee of Goddess Maa who spent his life in devotion and penance of Goddess Maa, then Goddess Maa, pleased with Barbarik’s penance, gave him three very powerful arrows, the power of each of those arrows could be estimated from this, which could destroy the earth. Barbarik vowed to support the weaker side in every conflict.
As the days of Mahabharata war were coming closer, Barbarik’s desire to participate in the war was increasing, he asked permission from his mother Hidimba to join the war, on which his mother said that the army of Kauravas is much stronger than the Pandavas, then Barbarik decided to be on the side of the Pandavas in the war.
Lord Krishna knew that the Pandavas would win the war but Krishna wanted the war to be balanced and not destroyed unnecessarily because Barbarik had vowed to fight on the side of the weak. Lord Krishna got an idea and took the disguise of a Brahmin.
Lord Krishna cleverly asked for a promise from Barbarik, Barbarik promised to fulfill his promise to Lord Krishna, in return Lord Krishna asked for Barbarik’s head,
Barbarik was stunned and he requested that the Brahmin to reavel hi own form and then Lord Krishna showed him own form.
Barbarik gave his head to Lord Krishna and in return Shri Krishna fulfilled Barbarik’s wish to see the mahabharat war and placed the head on a hill from where the entire mahabharat war could be seen and also gave him the boon of immortality and in Kaliyuga he will be known as Khatu Shyam and any devotee who comes with his wish will have his wish fulfilled.
History and Architecture
In the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively, Shri Roop Singh Chauhan Ji and Shri Diwan Abhay Singh Ji constructed the Khatu Shyam Temple. Rajputana styles can be seen in the construction of the temple.
