Story of Baidyanath Dham

The story of Baidyanath Dham is associated with Ravana, a devotee of Lord Shiva. According to the legends, Ravana was performing rigorous penance to please the Lord and even after performing penance for a long time, Lord Shiva did not appear in front of Ravana and then Ravana started cutting his head to please Lord Shiva and as soon as Ravana was ready to cut his head for the tenth time, Lord Shiva appeared in front of him.

And Lord Shiva asked Ravana to ask for a boon and Ravana asked to take the linga of Lord Shiva to Lanka and Lord Shiva accepted Ravana’s demand and put in a condition that if the Shivlinga will be placed anywhere on the way, then Lord Shiva will become a part of that place and Ravana accepted the condition.

All the gods were scared by this boon and took refuge in Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu started his leela and Ravana felt the need to urinate near Deoghar and Ravana gave the Shivlinga to a shepherd and went away. It is said that Lord Vishnu was in the form of a shepherd named Baiju and he kept the Shivlinga there.

When Ravana returned, he tried very hard to remove the Shivling but he could not. Now Ravana also understood the Lord’s play and returned to Lanka in anger and Lord Shiva got established there in the form of Baidyanath Jyotirling.
