According to mythology, King Mandhata was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and he started performing penance to get blessings from Lord Shiva, after which Lord Shiva was pleased with the penance of King Mandhata and appeared before him and King Mandhata requested Lord Shiva to settle here as a boon, which Lord Shiva could not refuse and appeared there in the form of Jyotirlinga to fulfill the wish of his devotee.
