Historical Significance of Rameswaram Temple
There are many stories related to Rameswaram temple, according to the first Hindu legend, when Lord Rama went in search of Maa Sita, Lord Rama’s army built a bridge from the island to Lanka to fight with Ravana, and before fighting the war, Lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva and asked him for blessings for victory and it is said that the original establishment of the temple was done by Lord Rama.
According to other Hindu legends, when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in exile and killing Ravana, the sages told Lord Rama that he has committed the sin of killing a Brahmin because of killing Ravana and the sages suggested going to Rameswaram to take a bath and install a Shivalinga. After this, Lord Rama ordered Hanuman ji to go to Mount Kailash and bring a Shivalinga and Lord Rama went to Rameswaram with Maa Sita. After waiting for a long time, when Hanuman Ji did not come, Maa Sita made a Shivling out of sand and installed it, but then Hanuman Ji also brought a Shivling from Kailash Mountain, so the other Shivling was also installed there, the Shivling of Maa Sita was called “Ramling” and the Shivling of Hanuman Ji was called “Vishwaling” and after taking a bath, Lord Ram worshiped both the Shivlings and he got freedom from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
